Insects in the heat of summer

Spanish FestoonInsects in the heat of summer

Grazalema Visitor Centre, Grazalema, Andalucia

An exhibition of macro photography by Steve Jones celebrating the insects of the Iberian peninsula.

From the 11th August to the 7th October 2010 the excellent Visitor Centre at Grazalema in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park in Andalucia is playing host to an exhibition of macro photography by Steve Jones entitled Insectos de Iberia: “El Calor del Verano” (Insects of Iberia “Heat of the Summer”).

Red Veined Darter - Sympetrum fonscolombeiMy family & I have been visiting Andalucía regularly since 2002 and have had the pleasure of exploring the Sierra de Almijara & Sierra de Grazalema extensively, becoming more & more absorbed by the wealth of wildlife spectacles with each passing trip to the area.

The exhibition reflects my passion for the wealth of insect life that occupies every niche in the arid landscapes of southern Spain, where butterflies illuminate the golden backdrop with their dazzling colours, dragonflies majestically rule the air above the rivers & streams, alien like Mantis stalk the vegetation, scorpions lie in wait beneath the rocks, cicadas give a voice to the heat of the day and crickets take over for the sultry nights. Examples of all of these can be seen in the exhibition.

A selection of cards featuring images from the exhibition are available at the visitor centre.

The Grazalema Visitor Centre can be found in the Plaza de los Asomaderos which also hosts the village’s main car park. The visitor centre is open 7 days a week, 10.00am to 7.00pm. If you are fortunate to be in this fantastic corner of Andalucia, which was designated a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 1977, why not call in and take a look at the natural world through my camera lens, you will be assured of a warm welcome from Clive & Sue the enthusiastic proprietors.

To see a gallery of images from the launch of the exhibition click on the thumbnail below. Once loaded, if you hover your mouse over the gallery you will see text buttons two thirds of the way up each side of the image. Click on the left to go back to the previous image and on the right to go to the next image. To exit the gallery click on the cross at the bottom right of the viewer.
